Akasa Air Makes History as First Carrier to Operationalize Guwahati

GUWAHATI. There is a kind of energy that fills a brand new airport terminal before travelers start using it. That silence was officially broken on Sunday when Akasa Air flight QP 1372 arriving from Mumbai taxied through a water cannon salute to become the commercial flight to dock at Guwahati’s new Terminal 2.

For the passengers on board the experience was more about being part of an event for the Northeast. As the doors opened they weren’t just stepping into a building; they were entering a ₹4,000-crore architectural statement that doubles as a cultural museum for Assam.

Where High-Tech Meets the Highlands

Walking through the terminal the first thing that hits you isn’t the size. Though it can handle 13.1 million passengers a year it’s huge. But the feel. In a world of glass-and-steel airports Guwahati’s new hub feels surprisingly natural.

The design is inspired by the Kopou Phool (the foxtail orchid). The architects brought the region’s culture into the building. Using over 140 tonnes of local bholuka bamboo the terminal pays tribute to the craftsmanship of the Apatani tribe.

The “Akasa” Experience

Akasa Air’s decision to be the launch partner for this facility shows the carriers bet on connectivity. The inaugural turnaround. Mumbai to Guwahati and back. Was handled with fanfare.

“Setting up shop as the first carrier in this terminal’s n’t just a win for us ” noted Bhavin Joshi, Akasa’s Co-Founder. “It’s about being part of the Gateway to the Northeast at a time when the region is finally getting the infrastructure it deserves.”

Passengers were greeted with Assamese performances. The first traveler through the gates was handed a boarding pass. A souvenir of a day when Guwahati leveled up its aviation game.

A Strategic Pivot for the “Act East” Policy

While the celebration was local the implications are geopolitical. Under Adani Airport Holdings this expansion isn’t just meant to handle domestic tourists. It is being positioned as a hub for the “Act East” corridor, designed to link mainland India with Southeast Asia.

With 14 entry points expanded baggage carousels and the capacity to handle 34 aircraft movements every hour the airport is no longer just a destination. It’s a transit engine. The hope among state officials, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is that this facility will attract carriers, potentially opening direct lines to ASEAN capitals like Bangkok, Singapore and Hanoi.

As the sun set on the day of operations the old terminal began its quiet transition, toward cargo and secondary roles. The lights of Terminal 2 however remained bright signaling a future where the Northeast’s no longer just a distant corner of the map but a central pillar of Indias global connectivity.
